Why Giant Bats are great:

They fly and can take your Hero flying to ruins at the beginning of the game.

If you have the Active Neutrals game option checked, you can bonsai them into neutral cities near your enemies, causing the neutrals to grow.

If you have the Hidden Stacks game option checked, you can change the Fight Order so that the Bats are always on top, hiding your good units (i.e. Heroes, Dragons, etc.) underneath. Taken 1 step further, you can make stacks of 8 Bats and stacks of 1 Bat and 7 Pegasi and strategically place them near the enemy (usually floating over mountains) to harass them and make them fortify more heavily. Your enemy will never know which are the strong stacks and which are the weak stacks.

One solid strategy is to build a solid home "country" that is separated by water, mountains or forest and then fly your troops into your enemy's back area and raze everything in sight. Once you start killing off their troops, they won't have the cities to rebuild their troops.

Always keep at least 1 of your Heroes searching ruins (preferably your General). It keeps your Hero going up levels quickly and you can gain a lot of money and allies. The very first turn, place your Hero with a flying unit (you should have at least one) and send him/her off to the ruins.

Don't declare war early. Especially when playing against computer opponents, wait until you've got your troops exactly where you went them and then declare war, wait a turn and then attack. This way you let the computer players beat up on each other as much as possible.

Don't waste money bribing computer players. I've never seen this do much.

Don't forget to go on Quests and to get blessed if possible.
