When playing as the Protoss, build a few shield batteries to replenish your ground troops' shields. A small number of Protoss troops can be devastating if used effectively: send them into battle and pull them out as soon as their plasma shields wear out and they actually start taking damage. Once they're back, use the shield generators to build up their shields and send them in again.

When playing as Zerg, it's all about burrowing and Zerglings at the beginning. Burrowing will allow you to hide your forces and let them heal if they're wounded. It's possible to make a ton of Zerglings very quickly. Although they may not be as tough as other enemy units, an upgraded horde of them can bring most anything down by sheer weight of numbers.

When playing as the Terrans, build an engineering bay as quickly as possible and start upgrading your ground troops armor and weapons. If you've got the resources, it's always nice to build two engineering bays and simultaneously upgrade both.
