If you're used to using a chase view when playing racing games, you should try to break that habit with F1 World Grand Prix. The in-car view (whether behind the wheel or from the slightly elevated rollbar-cam) will afford you much better control of the car and help you turn more consistent lap times.

Putting two wheels off in the grass can both help you and hurt you. Experiment at each track to learn where the usable shortcuts are located and then use them to your advantage whenever possible. (It'll take no time at all to figure out where the bad off-road spots are, because your car will slow dramatically, as if you had just hammered the brakes.)

There is a distinct delay in the downshifting response when using the manual transmission, which can result in your being in the wrong gear for an upcoming bend. Even though you give the button three quick presses when approaching a third-gear corner from a sixth-gear straightaway, the game may only downshift into fourth. Be prepared to correct this in the corner itself, or just stick with the automatic transmission.
